An Accurate Seam Allowance
Sewing with a consistent and accurate 1/4" seam allowance is important in most quilting projects, and it is more than just using a patchwork foot on your machine. Even if you're following a guide or continue to use your 1/4" foot, your seam allowances may vary. When your quilt patches are opened up and pressed, a bit of the quilt fabric is hidden "behind the seams. If you don't take this into account, you may end up with patches that are too small - altering your finished quilt greatly and potentially costing you more money in last-minute fabric purchases.
This free quilting video from McCall's Quilting will show you how to establish and check your 1/4" seam allowance to make sure it is consistent. The video also suggests using a piece of masking tape on the machine bed of your sewing machine to help guide you on your way.
