Quilted by Design: Pammie Jane

You’ve explored many creative paths before quilting—illustration, photography, surface design, and more. What was it about quilting that captured your heart and made it your main passion?
I was always a sewist. I have terrible ADHD and love to hop around between creative adventures. But there’s something almost puzzle-like about quilting that’s made it possible to capture my full attention.
Your book Purr-fect Patchwork celebrates both quilting and your love of cats. How did the idea come together, and what was the most rewarding part of bringing it to life?
You may not know this, but I was the photographer for the book also! Styling and shooting the photography for the book was honestly my favorite part of the book. Not that I didn’t love the other parts of making the book. But sourcing props and styling this book (not to mention borrowing and playing with other people’s cats!!!) was so fun for me. My husband might tell you otherwise, LOL. He got roped into a lot of things he didn’t want to do, like hauling sofas up into the Tetons. Hahahahaa
You’ve described your work as “maximalism at its finest.” What draws you to bold color, texture, and pattern, and how do you approach creating that joyful, layered look in your designs?
Again — I like solving puzzles! It’s really fun to take all these unique elements and experiment with ways to make them work together in a way that’s cohesive. I feel that way when I design fabric as well.
Much of your inspiration comes from your cats and other creatures. Can you share a moment when one of your furry friends sparked an idea or made its way into your creative process?
I have a fabric collection that’s shipping in February called Quilty Helpurrs. My cats are always finding ways to “help” in my studio. I actually try to keep them out of there, but they will break in and explore any chance they get.
Between designing, illustrating, writing, and family life, you wear so many creative hats. What helps you stay inspired and balanced while juggling it all?
Balance - ha! What’s that? LOL. Honestly, I have a season pass on the hot mess express. Really, though, it’s helpful that I have a supportive spouse. He’s my biggest cheerleader. And I’ve had to learn to let things go. I don’t always have a house that looks magazine-ready and we eat take-out more often than I care to admit. But I love what I do, and I couldn’t make it work without the support of my family.
